Blick Studio Oils are a traditional, but almost forgotten grade of artist color. Robert Gamblin in partnership with Blick developed Blick Studio Oils with an adherence to tradition.

Blick Studio Oils are a handcrafted line of traditional student grade oil colors. They are designed with the aim of being affordable to the artist. Premium artist grade colors are generally made by forcing pigment into an oil binder. Oil paints are generally made of two basic ingredients - oil and pigment. The latter is responsible for most of the material cost. The only way to arrive at a more affordable product is to remove some pigment from the equation. Tradition called for removal of half the pigment, replacing that pigment with marble dust (calcium carbonate). Robert Gamblin, in cooperation with Blick, developed Blick Studio Oils with an adherence to tradition. The Blick colors are made with the exact binders and the very same pigments used in the crafting of Gamblin Artist Colors - just less of them. We have replaced approximately half the pigment with high quality colorless extenders, including calcium carbonate, and added a touch of drier to achieve a dry time similar to premium grades. No other additives are used.
